Wanna Pick Your Brain!

So, I am in need of your advice and thoughts...

First of all, praising God that my daughter is coming home this summer to stay! She may be homeschooling, against her will, if my concerns about where her heart is at, remain. I see her needing to be plugged in to family more, less to peers, but that is a whole other post...

I am off to a homeschool conference in a couple of weeks- WAHOO! Really looking forward to some girlfriend time, some great seminars (I'm even making myself go to a math presentation), and endless homeschool supplies!

I LOVE teaching the younger ages...seeing them connect sounds to shapes, to hear them stutter out their first little sentence while hunched over their book- LOVE it. Love the nature walks, the easy math, baking together, reading great novels beside the fire...etc.

NOT so comfortable teaching older grades. The highest I have taught is gr 6, and really struggled with math, and some science concepts. If my daughter homeschools next year, she will be in gr 9, so I am feeling a little leery. I need some ideas from you moms on curriculum. First, I should tell you that both my daughter and I are pretty hands on, unstructured people. Dry textbooks make our brains turn off and our concentration drift. I have heard good thing about Teaching Textbooks for Math, so I think it will be worth it to get that. Science wise, the topics we have to cover are :
Cells and systems (not a favourite for either of us- we need some simple, fun stuff here to make it more...fun.)
Optics- the behaviour of waves.
Fluids and dynamics
Water systems on Earth.

Socials:
The development in Europe and North America from 1500-1815
*she will enjoy learning through some really great novels set in this time period. Any suggestions?

Any good Bible study books/character development novels, etc? I want her to read The Hiding Place for sure. What about writing programs?

So Ladies, give it to me-I want a long list of suggestions to research!

Girl your little girl is turning into such a beauty!
I am so glad that you are having your little bird come back to the nest. Your mothers heart will be all complete once again.
As you know.....I don't have anything for you when it comes to homeschooling.
I am so leery of what is waiting for us this next year. I have already seen a drift toward those I would want Julia to steer clear of socially. And the sad thing? She met them at church. :(
We have had some great talks...I think. Dear God help us both! :)

Definitely Teaching Textbooks! We're using it and love it. My 6th grade was behind in math and is now ahead - thanks to TT. I could make a commercial!

History novels - check Sonlight, Ambleside Online, Veritas Press. Hmmm, trying to think of more but can't. Those definitely have great lists of books.

Science. We've used Real Science by Gravitas Publications for the elementary ages. Very hands on, very user friendly. We've also used God's Design series by Answers in Genesis. And Apologia is always a good place to look.
