This is my Canadian Prime Minister. For those of you not familiar with Canadian politics, the PM is the leader of our country. We have 3 main parties: Conservatives, Liberals, and New Democrats. There are other parties, like the Bloc Quebecois, that is popular in Quebec (they would like to separate from Canada), and the Green Party, which is gaining a little more momentum each year as their big platform is the environment.
Mr Harper just called an election about 3 days ago. It is set for October 14th. That is right, in about 5 weeks, we will be ready to go to the polls. I have been thinking of the difference between our campaigning process, and the American's. Our gov't has been a minority one for the last 3 years, and an election was not officially set till next fall. I am wondering if the process is usually a bit longer when we go to term, cause this seems awfully fast compared to what the Americans are going through. Is this normal for you guys down there? It seems to be an awful lot of money is being spent by your politicians for their drawn out campaigns. Just an uneducated observation of mine.... We don't have the highly publicized chosing of candidates for the parties here either. Another observation of this Canadian was how the Hillary/Obama running seemed to take a long time and polarize their party a little bit.
Well, I am a strong Conservative. To hear the media talk, as well as many people in my province, it would seem that Canada is extremely Liberal, which it is in some ways. Many people in my province of British Columbia are NDP- which strongly represents unions- we have a lot of people in forestry, mill work here, etc. I like the moral stand that Stephen Harper takes on many issues. He is not that popular in my field of training and work- Early Childhood Ed, as he cut some daycare funding and gave money directly back to parents of young children instead. I don't think that many working families to see that happen, but for families whose priority is to stay at home with their children and try to survive on one income, it was helpful. I feel for those who must work and put their children in daycare, but as The Skipper expresses, he doesn't feel like we should have to subsidize all those families who choose to have 2 working parents. Anyways, I am getting off on a tangent here. I also like his stand on crime, the fact that he has lowered taxes, and that he would like our senate to be elected and have an 8 year term instead of 40 plus years or whatever it is now.
The point of this post is to say that I have heard that Stephen Harper is trying to soften his image and be more approachable. I think I could save Mr Harper a lot of money. He can skip hiring advisors and just do one simple thing. GET A LESS FORMAL HAIRCUT. His hair is too tidy. He needs some texture, some tousling, some misplaced hair for goodness sake! I strongly believe that he would get more votes if he would just do that one simple thing. Maybe hair shouldn't matter, but I think it does. The Skipper is getting tired of hearing this, so now I have to vent it on you poor people. What do you think? Aren't you slightly suspicious and at least a little put off by helmet hair? I really want him to win, especially with a majority gov't this time, maybe I should contact him and politely give him my suggestion.

He does look a bit like Richie Rich's father. From the movie. I don't remember what he looked like in cartoon form. He might could go with a new hair cut - but I can't picture him as a guy who puts gel in his hair. :-)
A little tossil might work.
When I first saw him he reminded me of Clinton...in the hair area.
But as long as that is where it ends...no problem there.
Anyway, there are several things I would change about our system...if anyone cared to listen...which they don't.
Our elections do take a long time and too much money. I am a conservative.....and I am excited in some ways to see who is running. But if we go by the Bible I don't think anyone is going to have an easy time in office.
Mom sent me a really cool clip of Palin before she was picked. She has had a lot of people praying for her for a long time. And if you can believe what she says...she really loves the Lord. And if that is true....she will need our prayers in a MASSIVE way. This nomination just put a target on her back.
It's not hair, it's a helmet.
america...the land of drama! so a strange hairdo sounds a lot better than the political stuff we "get" to hear about!
Our election process is way too long. Seems longer this time around and maybe it is. This is the first time in a very long time that we've had to choose a candidate for both major parties. Usually a new guy goes up against the current president or the vice president. Didn't happen that way this time so both parties started from scratch. I'm sure someone else could explain it better but that's the way I understand it. I just hope it doesn't take as long counting the votes this time like in 2000 and 2004.
This was so interesting as I know nothing about Canadian politics. I agree that our politicians in the U.S. spend way too much money and their campaigns are ridiculously long. I am sick to death of politics. I also agree with your assessment of helmet hair, quite scary I think! Makes me want to reach out and mess up your PM's do.
