I call on you, by fellow laundry experts to offer your opinions. Do you think that skirt has even been worn since the last time it was washed?

I think not. This is one of my pet peeves. This happens frequently with my daughter. This time I informed her that any clean item found in the pile would be given to the thrift store. That was met with protests, so we will see what changes. In the past, I have charged her money for each clean item, as it costs money to do extra laundry- I didn't consistently stay on top of that though.
Funny- this morning, I found filthy sweat shirts stuffed BACK in my 8 year old son's drawers. I think that both of these tactics are lazy attempts to quickly clean their rooms. I am sure that I did this as a child, but I am tired off dealing with it as a mom. How do you deal with such laundry issues, or is it only my children that try this? If you have perfect children, I am banning you from leaving any type of comment what so ever.

Nope, no, no way. My perfect children NEVER do this.
Never, Nope.
However, if this were ever to happen, which we know it wouldn't, I might refuse to wash their clothes altogether for a few weeks.
I would also show them how to use the machines and then, when they didn't have any undies or clean socks I would feel no sympathy.
I would also try really hard not to feel like a very bad mother as my kids went around in dirty clothes instead of washing them and looked awful and smelled awful.
When this failed attempt at teaching responsibility was over I would go and empty their drawers of all their stinky dirty clothes, wash them thoroughly, and forget it ever happened.
Of course my perfect children would never do this.
:o)
oh yeah! I hate this also, but since the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I have to confess guilt to doing this as well.
I didn't use to and I used to fight it, but since having the cuteness I have lost much of my ambition and find myself just washing the clean clothes. Unless I am in view of their clean clothes baskets. In which case I will toss the clean ones in there for them to deal with.
Which brings me to a good point. Mine have their own baskets for their clean clothes and I don't fold them any longer. They do it occasionally then are required to bring me the empty basket--that same hour.
However, I don't check their drawers or their rooms to see where they've put them-except Jackelope--because going into their rooms too often raises my blood pressure and sucks the fun right out of me.
Mine are perfect little angels. NOT
We just had the same thing happen at out house. Oldest son puts EVERYTHING in the laundry and daughter puts EVERYTHING in her dresser (clean or dirty).
I know I did this as a kid...I just know I did.
The new policy is: Son can only have one basket of laundry a week. Daughter MUST have one basket of laundry a week. All clothes MUST be dirty.
just a side note. The baskets are pretty big.
When I fold laundry I fold socks together. I find these socks, still together in my hamper. Someone who is too lazy to put them away just tosses them in. Grrr. And this same person thinks nothing of throwing a dirty sock in the clean clothes drawer. Blech. I have no answers for you. Only empathy.
Oh yeah - this irks me too - bigtime.
My girls are teenagers and do their own laundry - but I catch them -
One other big pet peeve is that they put the clothes in a basket after they are clean and leave them to get all wrinkly and then won't wear them - so they wash them again. Who foots the bill for all of the detergent and water - ME!
Don't even get me started.
Do we live in the same house? :)
My kids did this alot before they started to do their own laundry. Ruth is still doing it. I swear her room would be clean if I would just take the time to put it away for her, but what would she learn?
For me, as a kid of 9 or 10, I recall sleeping on my clothes! The bed would be piled with them, and it is crazy, but I love the wieght of them and how I could squish into them. Now, my kids lots of blankets, so no clothes pile on thier beds if I can help it. :)
Cindy P :)
PS: If you have time, you can check out how I was having a breakdown last night. I felt a kindred spirit when I saw your photo. But, mine was a clean pile on the table.
I has to be a kid thing.
I never did it--Mom would have started me on my second life. :)
Michael does his own clothes--but when he was a little guy he was always saying he had no socks or boxers. I would find them stuffed into the most bizarre places. So no the clean ones never made it back into the laundry.Nothing made it back to the laundry unless I went on a hunting expedition.
Julia is better but I do find folded items every once in a while.
She is ten and getting ready to start doing her own laundry. I figure if she can clean a bathroom--she can clean her own clothes.
I don't sound like the evil mom do I? :)
I recognize that skirt. It is JUST LIKE the many, many, many items of clothes I find in the "dirty clothes" simply b/c SOMEBODY is too lazy to hang them up!!
OH MY GOLLY!!! I have even gotten clothes in the hamper WITH THE HANGER ON!!!! Also, with tags on, and also, doll clothes.
manalive it makes me CRAZY.
even seeing your folded 'laundry' makes me boil.
great post!
Thank you for this post! I just had a huge fit today over my daughter doing the SAME thing. We got out summer clothes the other day. She tried on stuff to see what fit. Today, I go to sort laundry and find ALL the summer clothes that fit her in the laundry. Not one piece was dirty.
I just told her she had to do laundry with me. Trish has much better ideas. I may have to implement them. I like your idea of the thrift store too.
Oh, and dirty clothes in the drawer - that's my 7 year old! I have had to empty her entire drawer and wash it before.
