I was thinking about this hymn today, and then I came across a blog ( I pushed the random button on CW online, and then I closed the blog before I got the url site) that had the 3rd verse posted. This is the second verse, and I always find it very convicting, even though I would have to say that I don't think that sin held Him to the cross. I think that He chose to die for us, because of His great love for us.
Behold the man upon the cross,
my sin upon his shoulders;
ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held him there
until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life-
I know that it is finished.
