Shopping For a Shooter.

So, help me out. Educate me, my snap happy friends. Time for a new camera- through my air miles points. They are giving me two categories to choose from: point and shoot, or SLR. Now, I get what a point and shoot is, and that is what we already have, but The Skip needs it for work. I don't know what an SLR is exactly, but they look like quite a step up from what I already have. Here is where I show how I don't know much about cameras- I couldn't even tell you what kind ours is. I do know it is waterproof, and that what bugs me the most about it is that I can't zoom in on my kids on the ice or at the soccer field, etc. I would like a better quality camera that can zoom like I need it to, yet is tough enough to withstand a little bit of abuse, such as a drop or two and some beach sand. (Ok, well, maybe beach sand isn't good for any cameras, and probably dropping them isn't a good idea either, but hey, it happens! Believe me, I know.)What do you think? Anyone have a good point and shoot that still zooms great, or should I get whatever an SLR is? We have enough points for either one, but my little mind just figured out that hubs and I could get away next year if we are careful with our points...

Please recommend some good picks.

I know the trauma of looking for a new camera. After mine was stolen a few years ago I had to hunt for a new one.
I ended up getting a FinePix S700. It is a Fuji camera and has a 10X zoom...which has worked great for me. Of course you need to take the time to experiment with all of the different types of things you can do with it. I have been very happy with my choice. Of course I bought it about two years ago...so they have gotten better since then. All the pictures taken on both my blogs were taken with this camera.
Hope you find what you want...and THEN...after you take those pictures...make SURE you save them somewhere else besides your computer. ;)

NOT a camera guru, but I can tell you that an SLR is definitely a step up from a point and shoot - also very pricey! You can get different lenses for an SLR - macro, micro, wide-angle ... You can't do that with a point and shoot. You can *do* more with an SLR - change settings, apertures (whatever that means) ... Again, not a guru! :-) If you just want a camera that you point, it focuses and you click - you need a point and shoot. Many of them have pretty good zoom on them.
