How Are My American Buddies?

Your financial crisis is all over our Canadian news. Each time I see it, I think of all you sweet ladies who represent the average, hardworking American family, and wonder how you are all doing. None of you are really mentioning it on your blogs. Is it because you need an escape, or is it not affecting you as much as it may be affecting others? If you need to vent or share, feel free. I would like to be able to pray more specifically for you.

honestly, we are only being affected so far by inconveniences, like gas is too expensive to drive far... we're blessed here and can't complain. we're equally poor as we were last year, and work in industries that are only slightly influenced by the economy. we're seeing our friends hurt though, which is hard.

how kind of you to ask. are there any canadian consequences to our american nosedive?

I, too, think it's so sweet and cool of you to want the inside scoop!

Honestly, where I live, it's at least gas prices, although gas in my town and surrounding towns has never gone over $3.99, miraculously. But I can tell things are not good around here. For example, I had a HUMONGOUS garage sale in August. I made around $500, but had I had this garage sale last summer, I would've easily cleared $800. And I've got some really nice living room furniture I'm trying to sell and cannot even get ppl to bid on eBay or Craigslist! And I'm even taking offers! People are just not spending one single cent more than what they have to right now. Now, the affluent people don't seem to have altered much. All of the cars in the parking lot at Bud's preschool big gas guzzling SUVs because the doctors and their wives can afford pretty much anything they want. Even tithing in the church is unsteady right now!

You know, it really hasn't affected us other than the high price of gas and groceries. Chris is a financial advisor though and our wonderful media (snort) has caused alot of panic and fear in his clients and others. Sure, it's not a very good situation but it's not being truly represented in the media.

We're doing ok... between 2 mild winters and nobody spending more than they have to, Daniel was cut back to 4 day work weeks a couple weeks ago, so we're feeling it in the wallet. But, I can't say it's directly related to the economy, probably mostly to the weather (he does HVAC). We're toughin' it out, though, hopeing and PRAYING (well, I am anyway) for a BITTER COLD winter, and a LONG one, too.

And, by the way... I tagged you on my blog :P

Well, God is reminding me that it is His responsibility to take care of us.
We didn't really have much to speak of in stocks so we were not influenced by that. But, the job market is running very slow. Keith has not found a job yet...but God brought us here so when He is ready...Keith will work.
Gas of course has been very expensive...so I try and not do too much wandering around. For awhile we could hardly find gas but that was because of the storm-Ike.
So, that you for your prayers. I would appreciate you praying for a job for Keith.
Things do seem quite a mess...but God is faithful.

We're starving... please send chocolate asap.

:) Like everyone else, gas and groceries are high, which stinks. Money always feels tight, and I imagine the next year or two will feel even tighter.

Nobody I know is in a state of panic despite the efforts of our media to induce mass hysteria. The headline on a paper this week was, "FEAR SETS IN!" Whatever.

I agree with everyone else. The media is so biased on EVERYTHING and it seems that there is always an ulterior motive to their broadcasts. In this situation, it's fear-mongering at it's best (or worst), and sadly it's working.

We have personally felt the squeeze at the pump and the grocery store, but we have also noticed that our electic bills have skyrocketed. I'm wondering if that's just a local thing though since no one else mentioned it. Hmmmmmmm...

Agree with all the comments about the media. And actually, seems like gas prices have dropped (maybe moving states helped). In Maryland, we were paying at least $4, in Colorado, we're paying closer to $3.35. The biggest affect on us, personally, is that we were unable to sell our house in MD. But we have a renter moving in the end of the month (and paying us more than our mortgage). Oh, wait, the biggest affect is that my husband is worrying more about finances than normally. :-)

The biggest way it has affected us is my husband's future job has been delayed again. We've been living on a very tight budget for a long time. A better salary and health insurance would be nice. Another thing is that we won't be able to buy a house anytime soon. We've heard that it's harder to get a loan and we'll have to have a larger down payment than what we have saved up so far. That means I'll probably have to work another board sub job this coming spring.

On the other hand, gas prices are coming down. That's good news. John said he paid $2.97 the other day! Haven't seen that in a while. I'm still able to find good bargains at the grocery store in spite of high prices.

But, the pessimistic side of me, which rarely shows up, says that things are probably going to get worse. This is just the beginning. . . Scary thought but I know the Lord is always with us.

Utilities have gone up too! Thankfully we live on the second floor of our apartment building. Last winter we turned our heat on for only two days.

How's Canada doing through all of this?

Our markets went crazy in a bad way last week, and things haven't improved yet. It is reaction to what is happening in your country and Europe, I think. Our economy, especially in Western Canada is strong, so we are being told it is a financial crisis, not an economical one. We have many natural resources in Western Canada that are sought after. Our gas is down too, but utilities, groceries are rising in price.
