Why I Like Homeschooling a 5 Year Old Keener:

He spent the afternoon hanging out in the yard with his dad, and built a bed for a stuffy- by himself. I am not lying- The Skip held a few boards for him and started a couple nails, but the design and work was done by J. I will have to show you his dog house and end table that he built as well- really cute.

(do you see that he even built in a wood pillow platform)

While I toodled around cleaning, he got out his white board and asked a couple of instructions on printing some letters. I got out the magnetic letters and gave them to him for examples...

The next thing I knew, he had written out the whole thing. ) These pics are from a couple months ago- I was like, "huh? You can write the alphabet?") Really with it teacher.

Give him a cardboard box, and he will create forever- just make sure you have lots of glue, tape, and paint. And soap...

Voila, snazzy green car, complete with tuna can headlights!

I really love teaching this age, which I guess makes sense as I was a preschool teacher at one time. They are so eager to learn that all you have to do is not get in their way! We do have a little routine, but I won't bore you with that. It is special to have this time with the younger two, though we miss the 2 older when they are away at school. I found that the two little guys were missing out on Mommy time when I home schooled their older siblings, so I am treasuring this time with them. (except for yesterday when we went for a "bike ride", A.K.A.- Jane carries Little M's bike, muttering under breath and saying all the "good mommy" things out loud, while Little M has a spazz at the top of his lungs, as he slowly trails along behind her, while she apologizes to the people out walking their little dogs.) Other than THAT, things are going smoothly- thanks God!

Isn't it crazy the things they figure out when you're not looking!?!

Last night it was my turn to take E to dance class... turns out the girl can skip. Who knew?

I'll tell you who -- her father! He took her to dance last week and when I asked "Hey, anything new?" he didn't feel like skipping fell into that category. Hello! Major milestone!

Okay, I'm over it now, thanks for letting me vent!

okay, so i'm not really sure if i wanna put my ignorant self out there and look dumb. but then i don't want to be tortured all day trying to figure out what the word "keener" means. be kind to me!?

what a wonderfully creative little boy. you know what that also shows to me? that he has one cool, laid back, easy going mama that lets him get/make messy and sees the beauty in the end.

so proud. so proud of you both!

so, now email me the definition of keener so i can rest.

hugs.

I love this creative side of kids. Julia is the same way.I keep finding rocks and pieces of board around the camper. When I asked her the other day what she was planning...she told me she was working on a bench for the play ground.
I love the bed your son made...and how cool he got to do it with the skipper. Great memories.

What a smart boy you have there! And how to sweet to make a stuffy bed :-)

I agree that is a prefect age. It was favorite too. You have pretty creative boys on your hands.

Enjoy this time.

Love the creativity!! And the "bike ride" reminded me of my youngest sibling (and brother), who would go "ride bikes" with the next 2 siblings above him - they would ride their bikes, and he would walk/run beside his. He would "ride his bike" all day!!

How fabulous! Well all except the bike incident. ;) I haven't worked up the nerve to take all my kids biking by myself. Not sure why that's so intimidating, but I'd rather go by myself or while my husband is with us.

I'm impressed that you're so lax about paint and nails. My kids can do wonders with cardboard boxes, but the paint stays up on the top shelf while I make vain promises of, "maybe later." My kids are so missing out! ;)
