The Miraculous, Evolving Chocolate Chip Cookies

Our 11 year old daughter is doing the beginning of the world at school. Of course, they are going back millions, and millions of years (eye roll). I don't have a problem with schools teaching evolution- ok, I would rather they didn't- but I can understand them wanting to teach it, as long as they teach it as a THEORY. AND- as long as they give Creationism an equal playing field. Realistically, I know this isn't happening. I do know that my daughter's teacher, who is an Evolutionist, did discuss Creationism with the kids, though it is not getting equal time in the classroom studies. She was given the opportunity to write a paper discussing the two points of view, so we both thought that was a pretty cool opportunity for her. Here is an excerpt from her paper:

Evolution: The theory of Evolution is where people believe that human life originated from a cell, and the cell could develop into a more complex life form, which became, over millions of years, the life we know now.

Creation: Creation is where a Supreme Being, God, created the World and everything in it. I am a strong believer in Creation.

Comparison: Let’s say you came home from school to find a cooling rack full of cookies, practically bursting with chocolate chips. You say “MMMMM, Mom made cookies!” Now let’s pretend your little brother, Bob walks in and says “No, that is not what happened.” you ask “Well then, what did happen?” Bob says “Well, there was a bowl on the counter and the cupboards above, holding all the ingredients, exploded and the butter, flour, and the baking soda came flying out. I have no idea how, but they somehow poured the exact right amount into the bowl! Then a HUGE gust of wind came in, blew open the fridge door, picked up the milk and eggs, and poured the exact right amounts into the bowl! All of a sudden, the dial on the oven turned to the exact right temperature. The oven door banged open and the cookie batter assembled itself on a pan, and slid into the oven!” Obviously, Bob is lying. The cookies MUST have a creator. The same is with the Earth. It could not have sprung from nothing! It must have a creator
.

I loved her comparison. She found an explanation like that on a website we found and then changed it to her cookie baking example. My darling daughter went on to state several facts about evolution contradicting itself and ended with the sentence: "Evolution is a lie."

She got a perfect mark on her paper. I am pretty proud of her courage.
