Getting Ready for Some Cold Weather Reads

Well, it is that time of year again. I am eyeing up the wood stove every morning, waiting till the thermostat hits 68 so I can light 'er up! This morning it was 69, and I was just scrunching up the newspaper to start it when my sister called to remind me that it was Bible Study morning. That ended anything I was doing and the scramble was on to make it out the door in time. It was sunny by this afternoon so I was glad not to have the house too hot. When you live in my area, the saying is, " If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes." It changes frequently, but does get damp and rainy for a lot of the winter. This is not what I am posting about though! Getting back on topic, fall is upon us, my wood stove is ready for lighting, and this is my 3rd night in a row to climb into our big tub with a cup of tea, my ginger pumpkin candle, and a good book. Well, my book isn't that great, and that is the reason for this post. I live in a smaller town about 2 hours from a big city. One hour of that is spent on a gorgeous ferry ride so it is not that bad of a commute. We don't go into town,(that is what we locals call the city) very much because the ferry corporation robs us blind when it comes to commuting costs. Anyhoo, whole other post there, right Kathleen?.... We have one bookstore in my town, and a couple of used book ones as well. It is no backwoods hick town- we have a lot of culture, etc, but this area is very New Age and you don't find a lot of Christian novels or just well written wholesome ones around. I find the same thing at the library as well. I would like to have a list of recommended books at hand to give my hubby present ideas that he could just order off the Internet or that I could refer to when requesting books to be brought in to the local library. So, my ever resourceful and well read friends, I would like your recommendations for a good curl up and relax winter read. To help you, I will tell you some of my favorites: Anne of Green Gables- I am Canadian as well, have red hair, freckles, and a wild imagination- how could she NOT be my very favorite fictional character? I have read all of Lucy Maud Montgomery's other work as well, Jan Karon, Louisa May Alcott, Mary Higgins Clark (as long as no horrible things happen to children), Diane Mott Davidson, Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, I have read a couple by Karen Kingsbury that I liked, etc. I love a wholesome romance with REAL people in it. I love some mystery and intrigue as well. Don't anyone suggest the Left Behind series. I gave up and got annoyed at all the volumes- I personally think that they could have doubled up each book and saved everyone a lot of money. Just my opinion. So give me all your suggestions and help a harried homeschooling book worm unwind at night!

How about Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, or Pride and Prejudice? ANy library would have those.

How I wish I could help but I seem to be in a reading slump.
But if you come across something good--let us know.
I do know that most all the books by Francine Rivers are good.
If you were close I could give you my Left Behind books and then you would not need to buy them. ;)

I loved the Abram's Daughters series by Beverly Lewis. For action, mystery and intrigue, In My Father's House and the others in the Shiloh Legacy by Brock and Brodie Thoene. It's about the lives of Americans at the end of WW I (historical fiction). Sophie's Heart by Lori Wick is a great Romance. The Hawk and the Jewel is another one of my favorites by her. Love Comes Softly by Janette Oke (a Canadian!) is my all time favorite romance.

We seem to like a lot of the same things... Francine Rivers Mark of the Lion Series is wonderful. Really, I've loved everything of hers that I've read. I enjoyed The Russians series by the Thoenes; other things of theirs as well that aren't too fluffy. I've enjoyed several Jodi Picoult books. The Time Traveler's Wife is odd but really good.

Well, I think all my faves have been mentioned either by you or other commenters. I have to second Jane Austen and Brock and Bodie Thoene, though. SOOOOOO good! I also really enjoy Nicholas Sparks. He's a secular author, but pretty clean. He wrote "The Notebook", "A Walk to Remember", and "Message in a Bottle", as well as a bunch of novels that haven't been made into movies.

I hear ya on the Left Behind series. I quit after book 4, I think.

Hey girl...I"ve been reading the "Dragon Quest" series...apparently I"m 2 books behind and my library has seemingly forgotten my request.

I'll have to think on this. I rarely read "classics". One of my favorite authors for unwinding and quick reads is Clive Cussler. My mom hooked me onto him.

One of my favorite authors have been Brock and Bodie Thoene. They've written christian fiction for years. They're best known for their WWII books. But they branched into westerns at one point.

Thank you, BTW, way for checking in on me. It's been crazy busy around here. By the time the kids get all to bed it's 9pm and then I get to choosed between feeding my spirit, cleaning house and blogging. Blogging has been losing in such a big way that I"m wondering if I can be considered a blogger. :-) We've been enjoying our ride - but I noticed some scratches on it that could have only come from children driving their hot wheels on the car. I'm really praying that no one notices it when I turn in the vehicle. We definitely don't have the money to pay for that. Is that dishonest? They put me in their most expensive car ... The thing I'll miss most about the bigness is that the kids have to reach to hit each other. ;-)

Thank you for checking in on me. it made my day.

PS - Mini-e has chicken pox.
