Most of you in the States sound like you are already on summer holidays- VBS, summer schedule, etc. We have started slowing down in school here, but that is because we homeschool. Everyone else in public school goes till the very end of June. We Canucks think of Summer starting July 1st, which is our country's bd. So that is my first question: is public school out for the summer down there already, and is it already holiday season? When does school start in the fall then?
Second query. Even though Julie made fun of my breakfast choice (poached eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, brown toast, tea and honey), I still may consider including her the next time Kathleen and I go out for a bd breakfast. I was intrigued by her comment (meant in fun of course- I don't want to get anyone in trouble!) though- is that a weird breakfast to my neighbours to the South? What do you eat down there for a yummy morning meal? (of course we have pancakes, or flap jacks, a lot up here as well). Anyways, I have heard of grits, but don't really remember what that is... What about anyone from another country? What do you eat for breakfast over in South Africa, Fee?

Weird? What did she think was weird about it?
I don't know what grits are but when we went to Florida, sausage and biscuits with this thick, white gravy was really popular in the southern states. I, personally, did not enjoy the gravy at all.
My mom told me that in Israel they were served lots of fruit and vegetable salads in the morning, along with breads and crepe-style things.
This should be fun to read. I love hearing about other cultures! :-)
I live in NY and school here goes until June 22nd this year. That is usually when it ends- the 2nd to last Wed. of June. It starts back up on the Wednesday after Labor Day.
On a normal day we have cereal for breakfast. On weekends we have a big breakfast just like the one you described.
I have a special prayer request over at my blog. I would appreciate it if you would stop by and let me know that you will be helping me pray.
It must be a different breakfast to some- I am looking forward to learning about some foods that we don't normally eat- so far I haven't really heard anything different. My kids like cereal too- though they complain that they can't have the sugary kind!
Down here in TX school lets out sometime near the 3rd week in May and starts up again the 2nd week in Aug.
We have just had a law go through the TX legislature stating that schools cannot start before Labor Day, so this next school year will not start till Sept 4th and end June 12th (I think).
Personally, If it were up to me I think the public schools should go all through the summer and take the break in March and April. Those 2 months are the only two months you want to be outside in TX with the possible exception if October.
NO one in their right mind goes outside in TX in Aug unless they plan to be submerged in water the whole time! They might as well sit in a classroom. JMHO of course! :o)
And on the subject of breakfast. Give this TX girl some Cinnamon Buns and I'm happy. My dh loves Breakfast tortillas with eggs, sausage, and potatoes, with salsa over the whole thing. That is a yummy, and oh-so-popular breakfast, but as I can't have eggs I must forgo that yummy Tex-Mex breakfast.
Our kids last day was May 31st and they go back August 23rd.
As for the breakfast, I have a bowl of oatmeal (the long cooking kind) with a packet of stevia to sweeten it and a banana.
The kids like pancakes and sausage, but it's one of those foods I have crossed off my list.
Okay - when I slow down and read - I guess the breakfast isn't that weird. I like bagels with cream cheese and jam - or muffins (made some super yummy ones this morning with fresh blueberries). My kids like cereal and toast - and oatmeal. So I guess mainly carbs! hee hee I don't eat breakfast much. What is brown toast? Is that toasted wheat bread? I definitely have to have coffee every morning - regardless of what I eat. I am glad you knew I was just teasing you!
Yes, public school here is out - and with 101 degree temps today - I think we could say summer has officially begun! School ended here in mid-May - but we just moved to TX - in WV where we moved from it probably is just getting out this week. That's all weird to me.
I have a homeschoolers question on my blog - so jump over and help me out would ya? :)
Just read read your comment here and oh yeah - I'm with you - so we need to get some conversation going here - because it is nice to learn what people eat from all over. Lots and lots of new ideas.
Seems the further south you live, the earlier school gets out. My nieces were out the week of May 21st and they go back on August 9th. Doesn't make sense to me. August is so hot!! We generally think of summer beginning with Memorial Day which is celebrated the last Monday of May.
We eat cereal about 362 days out of the year. Sometimes I make oatmeal, muffins, pancakes or french toast. Grits is mainly a southern thing but I don't like them. If I fix bacon and eggs or sausage and eggs, it's for dinner!
When we lived in Romania, I had a hard time finding oatmeal and the selection of cold cereal was slim. My favorites there were cocoa crispies and cornflakes (yuk!) The typical Romanian breakfast is cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, salami and white bread (untoasted). We rarely ate a typical Romanian breakfast.
Does no one eat Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Sugar Crisp and donuts anymore? What's wrong with you people? Are you all a bunch of health nuts?
If I could have any breakfast I wanted, I would have Eggs Benedict without the Canadian bacon. (Sorry, Canadian friend.) :) I LOVE the sauce. But today I had a granola bar instead.
Did you ever find out what grits are? They are eaten in the southern states. I went to college in the south and they were on every menu! They're good with butter, but they are different if you aren't used to them! Mushy and not a lot of flavor, really.
Schools here got out on the 30th and that was late b/c they had to make up two snow days! They were planning to be out on the 25th. And then they start up again Aug 15. They've moved it all earlier. So we're in full summer swing!
we don't have big breakfasts here everyday.. but on the weekend we usually have biscuits and gravy and eggs.. fried.. yikes.. and also for our heavier breakfasts with have pancakes or french toast.
of course i am a coffee drinker not tea.. but your breakfast sounds delicious..
We only have a big cooked breakfast if we go out to a restaurant, or if it is a special occassion. The cooked breakfast consists of fried/scrambled or poached eggs, toast, fried mushrooms and tomato and lots of crispy bacon!!! Have NO idea what a grit is..... and we never have pancakes or flapjacks for breako! These are served as a tea or pudding where I come from!!!!
For breakfast ,at home, we have a health cereal called Pronutro or Jungle Oats, Bran with yoghurt, or Tasty Wheat porridge.
That's it!
A breakfast that can only be eaten when you are not watching your waist expand would be--Eggs over medium, bacon, big huge biscuits with lots of real butter and either jelly or syrup. Of course I have to have coffee with sweet in low and half n half.
School ended on the 28 of May for us and we will go back in on August the 11 I believe.
Our summers are getting shorter--somebody said they are trying to fix it where we will be going to school years round. We will just have longer breaks at Christmas and other holidays. I hope they do not go to this--we would have to make major schedule changes.
All that talking about breakfast has made me hungry--only one more hour till dinner.
Strangely enough...my kids prefer cereal or cereal bars to any form of REAL breakfast..so we breakfast for dinner instead. I, personally, LOVE bacon, eggs and pancakes...I did pull some frozen waffles (aren't I a good mommy, HA) out of the big freezer for tomorrow...may take some arm twisting to get the children to eat them.
I would like to get to the point where I make healthy FUN food for the kids EVERY day...wishful thinking???
oh...school: We are year round school...got out May 31 and start back July 23. We go 9 weeks on 3 weeks off and so on until "summer" which is 6 weeks. I LOVE THIS SCHEDULE! It is so nice!!
