"We turn our eyes from evil things,
Oh Lord we cast down our idols."
I have been pondering on things like that in my heart lately. What are my idols? They are not obviously evil things, perhaps. I have just re read the awesome essay called Tyranny of the Urgent, by Charles E. Hummel. It talks about how we are so busy doing the things we shouldn't do, that we don't do the things that we should. We are so busy rushing around to do the urgent things that are pressing in on us, that we forget to do the IMPORTANT ones. Sometimes those important things are things that feel like they can be put off, but they are really what we need to be giving priority to, as the important things in our lives are the things that God has called us to do. If we are too busy, tired to do those things, like pray and spend time seeking God's direction, we will miss out on the peace that Christ is offering and that He had during His time on earth. It really struck me that He had DEMANDS while he was ministering here, I mean, He was surrounded by the lost, sick, and dying. BUT at the end of His short life, He was able to say that it was finished. He had done all that GOD had laid out for Him to do, and was at peace with it. He accomplished this by devoting time to pray and seek His Father, daily. I am seeking to be more disciplined in this area. To cast down my idol of self reliance, independance, and popularity (what will Bertha think of me if I say no to that request, even though I know I shouldn't do it?!?!. What are some of the things that you perhaps need to lay aside to allow God total access to your heart?

First of all, I really like your new look!
Second, these are the areas that God has been dealing with me about too. I blogged about a book called No Other Gods by kelly Minter awhile back, and that is just what this book is about. SO good.
wow jane, i love it when you post what you are learning from the Lord. this was awesome. especially the part about how Jesus had demands. so true and i never thought of it that way!
my friend just gave me a new bible study to start today. it's called "no other gods"...confronting our modern-day idols. so how cool that this post lines up what is already on my mind and heart!
HOW funny...just glanced at gayle's comment. welp that's the same book. cool!
First I am glad you mentioned the book you talked about in the comment you left the other day. I kept meaning to come back and ask you about it and forgot.I had not heard of it before. Sounds like it has some good stuff in it.
The other day while doing my study I became aware of just how much I put before Him. Isn't that what idols are? I think sometimes if we are not careful we can miss that an idol does not have to be a material thing...it is anything that is raised above Him. Me being consumed with the need for security....being will to spend hours thinking of how I can accomplish it...that can become my god.
Just like Egypt and all it represented became a god for the Israelites...
Good post...keep letting God expose things in your heart and mind...I be right here with you on the same journey. :)
