We have a relative visiting who suffers with depression. It has been a life long struggle for this person, who is now in her 50's. She is a believer and is open about her struggles. She has only been here for a few days and it is obvious that things could be better for her. She wants to be better, yet there are no easy answers, and until I walk a mile in her shoes, I am not going to give her any, either. She has mentioned just hanging on to the Bible verses that contain God's promises, which was encouraging to hear. When I checked my emails just now, there was one from Amazon featuring Beth Moore's, Get Out of That Pit,as well as a devotional called Praying God's Word Day by Day. Obviously, our daily read needs to be the Bible, but she avidly reads other books as well, so I thought this might be helpful to her. I have to confess that I have never read Beth Moore, but most of you have such good things to say about her. So, I need your advice, do you know these books, and would they be helpful to my loved one? Please pray for her- a specific request would be that she would be open to attending a good church that could be a support for her and help her grow in Christ.

Get out of that Pit was a great book - But I have also heard great things about a book by Sheila Walsh called "Honestly" - you can find it by googling.
Best wishes -
And I hope that bladder infection clears up - those are miserable.
oh, No!! Get better soon. Cranberry juice??
I gave that book to a friend who loved it. I love Beth Moore stuff - it's straight to the point and easy to understand.
The other book that I would highly recommend would be "Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce Meyer. Her book breaks things down by chapter. So you could read a chapter a day for a devotion. It's an amazing book.
God bless your friend with total and complete freedom from this and the power to OverCome. :-)
PS- I'd be happy to mail to canada. :-) You and I really do have similar humors. I'd love to find that button on a t-shirt, too. :-)
hey jane, we have lots in common this week! UTI, friends with depression, never having read beth moore.
since i am at a loss of wisdom on all three counts, i will fold you in with my prayers this morning.
Both are great books. I just read the Pit book and it is amazing. She includes passages of scripture to read and reflect on each day as well. I thought it was so helpful to already have those there ready for me b/c when I was struggling so much, I didn't even have the energy to FIND the scriptures that would comfort me. Praying God's Word (not the day-by-day version) is a must-own. It is simply organized scriptures by topic. WONDERFUL.
And girl, get thee to a Bethie study! You will be changed.
sent you an email...hope things look brighter soon for all of you!
Please don't think I'm a stalker. You left a comment on my blog once and for that I gave you an award. Come on over to my site and check it out...
Well you already know that I am a Beth Moore fan. She is honest about where she has come from and she loves the Lord Passionately.
I would highly recommend her studies and books.
I know that there have been many Christians who have been vocal about their battles with depression. If the depression is chemical...I hope she feels free to get medical attention. If she is stuck by past event Beth has a study called Breaking Free. Also the book The Shack would help.
Shonda Pierce is a Christian comedian that has had a battle with Depression and she has included it in her videos and I believe she has a book too.
I know this is rough....we have a friend that has been struggling with it for years..it runs in his family. It is not always just spiritual sometimes it is chemical.
I pray she finds comfort and relief.
I wish I could help. I have never read either of these books. I am not opposed to Christian help books. I think the Lord can use books like this to touch/change someone's life. My friend Mel over at http://melissamashburn.blogspot.com/ did an in-depth study of "get out of the pit" You might want to ask her. She is a wonderful person.
I am so sad that I am jusst now seeing this because I would have RAVED about Get Out of that Pit.
AWESOME book for what you are describing. I actually think that everyone could benefit from this book.
And I agree with Cindy...do a B.M. study. You will NOT regret it.
Wondering how you are doing....praying for you and yours.
He sees you. :)
