Monday is Thanksgiving Day here in Canada. Do you know why ours is earlier than the States? Why do Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving? When and where was the first one? The kids and I read up on it this week. Do you know any of the answers? NO GOOGLING ALLOWED! If you are really anxious to know, I will post some answers later...
It is our turn to host the family dinner, so I have a 25 lb bird thawing in the fridge. Whoever hosts makes the turkey, stuffing, and gravy- the rest is potluck- yams, green salad, ambrosia salad, homemade buns, brussel sprouts, pickles, cranberries, carrots, peas, etc. Makes for a lot less work, rather than having just one person do it. Usually we go around the table and each say what we are thankful for. This year we made a Thankful Tree for our dining room wall. Everyone present will get a "leaf" (a construction paper handprint) on their plates and will be given a pen to write down what they are thankful for on it. They will then share what they wrote and pass the leaf down to our two oldest children, who will glue it to our bare tree. Once it is done, it will be an fabulous reminder of our numerous blessings!

Why do you celebrate Thanksgiving earlier than the US? Ummmmmm. . . because it's already fall weather there and Thanksgiving has to be celebrated when it's cool? Or maybe because you want to celebrate it on Columbus Day? Obviously I have no idea and I bet no one else can come up with such stupid answers as mine. Looking forward to finding out!
PS It's supposed to be 94 degrees F here on Monday. I'm really longing for some cool crisp days!
PPS Happy Thanksgiving!!
I have no clue why we celebrate it earlier. I can't wait to find out because I've always wondered.
I hope you guys have a great dinner, we're on our own this year. Yippee!!
Well, that makes sense!
Teach us Canadian guru -
We sit at your feet to learn Canadian everything!
I can't wait to come to Canada one day - and you know what my two favorite things to see would be?
You and Kathleen!
Happy Thanksgiving!!! Your menu sounds pretty yummy (except for the turkey...cuz I don't love turkey).
Of course we don't know why Canada celebrates earlier, we are self-absorbed Americans...LOL!
Can't wait to find out the answers. Have a wonderful holiday!
Ooooh, wait, I *have* a question...Does your Thanksgiving usually fall on a Monday..or is it a specific date each year?
Love the tree idea.
25lb turkey-WOW!
I don't know why ya'll get to celebrate before us???????????
I wish our was earlier because too much turkey to close together is too much.
I with you on your meal--every thing but the brussel sprouts. Haven't been able to find any I like.
But, I have a sweet potato dish that is to die for.Serious!
If you eat too much to often you'll be saying good by to some clear arteries. :)
Have a great day!
I remember reading Coffee Mom's thanksgiving story last year - I think her oven died just before the big day, something like that. I've often wondered why Canada's day is earlier but then, you don't have a "pilgrim" story, do you? So, of course, it would be different than here. At least, that's my opinion. Do tell!
Kate
Happy Thanksgiving! Our turkey dinner is today because that's what worked best for our family.
I believe our Thanksgiving is earlier because the harvest comes earlier...is that right? And I think the tradition comes from the Harvest Home celebrations in Britain (celebrating the harvest)...but I'm honestly not sure...and I'm Canadian! How bad is that?
I've actually been wondering why you celebrate, why it is early, etc. So DO TELL!
You have a nice site here; stumbled while surfing the NEX BLOG option. Being in Canada, what do you think of the NAU? The North American Union is something I posted and just resently came across...
Oh, tell us!! I'm seriously curious but haven't had time to look up the answer. Since our Thanksgiving was a date set aside by our government -- tell us about yours. Does it have something to do with the fact that the vikings found you guys way before Columbus found South America??
Tell us, educate us!!
